Different Torah Reading in Israel

During certain years the Torah portion read in Israel does not coincide with the Shabbat Torah portion in the Diaspora. In Israel the second days of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot are not full holidays, as in the Diaspora. If then the second day of a Festival in the Diaspora falls on a Shabbat, a special portion is read, putting congregations in the Diaspora behind a week. This is compensated for by reading double Torah portions over the following weeks. Therefore, it is imperative that you check with a rabbi which Torah portion is to be read in Israel on the Shabbat you intend to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah. This must be done before the child begins to study the portion.
